According to WD, the only solution is to reformat the drive. A bit of research shows that lots of folks have had issues with/misunderstood how to use the Drive Lock app, getting locked out of their drives. This is the app that allows the user to encrypt/decrypt the drive, and it's apparently part of the firmware.
After formatting for Mac OS Extended, I mount the drive and an added virtual CD pops up, too. So I picked up a 750GB WD My Passport at BB a couple days ago, oblivious to the added Drive Lock/Smart BU crap on the label - I was going to format it anyway.
